Color Brain is a color set management utility for graphic designers, web developers and programmers, providing quick access to multiple sets of 10 saved colors and numerous ways to use, edit and manage them.

The primary interface is the Color Brain HUD (Heads Up Display), which lets you manage multiple sets of 10 colors each, accessing the color picker, edit each color's Red Green and Blue component values, and edit one of a several available color representations, depending upon your needs. Click the icon on the left for help.

The color representations available in the Color Brain HUD, available by clicking the title over the right-hand column (HTML by default), are:

HTML - the hexadecimal color representation common in HTML code, e.g. #1188DD where 11 represents the red value, 88 the green, and DD the blue, each ranging from 00 (0) to FF (255)

CSS RGB - the alternate rgb representation used in CSS code, e.g. rgb(10,120,200), with each value ranging from 0 to 255

HEX - standard hexadecimal notation used in many programming languages, similar to HTML color coding but prefixed with 0x instead of #

UIColor - Objective C Cocoa method for defining a UIColor object

HSV - Hue, Saturation, Value representation, also known as HSB (Brightness). H represents an angle around the color wheel with 0° at red, 60° yellow, 120° green, 180° cyan, 240° blue, 300° magenta, and 360° coming back around to red. S represents the color intensity from 0.0 to 1.0, and V represents the brightness value from 0.0 to 1.0.

CMYK - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black representation, commonly used for printing purposes. Mapping from RGB to CMYK is subject to varying color profiles tuned for a specific printing environment dependent on the printer, ink and paper in use. The translation provided here is just one example. Each value ranges from 0.0 to 1.0.

YUV - The color space used for broadcast TV. Y represents the brightness, and is the only value that matters for black and white broadcasts. U and V represent the chrominance values on the red and blue spectrums, respectively.

16-bit RGB - RGB values expressed in 16-bits each, so each value ranges from 0 to 65535. These are the values actually returned by the Apple color pickers.

The Color Inspector window can be accessed by clicking the Color Brain icon in the HUD, choosing Color Inspector from Color Brain's Window menu, or entering Command-I. The Color Inspector shows icons for each color in the current set, and provides controls for entering component values for one selected color in numerous color spaces, including:

RGB-16 - Red, Green and Blue components, stored as 16-bits per color, so each component value ranges from 0 to 65535.

RGB-8 - Red, Green and Blue components, stored as 8-bits per color, so each component value ranges from 0 to 255.

CMYK - see description above.

HSV - see description above.

YUV - see description above.

When you select "Manage Color Sets..." from the Color Set popup menu in the HUD, the Color Set Manager is displayed, which provides tools for renaming, duplicating and deleting color sets.

When you click on a color well in the HUD or on the selected color in the Color Inspector, Apple's standard Color Picker window is displayed, so you can use any of the color selection methods provided by Apple to set the current color.

You can choose whether or not to have Color Brain's windows float above all other applications, and you can gain access to the Color Inspector using the main menu bar's Window menu when Color Brain is the front application (click a Color Brain window so that the menu next to the Apple menu says "Color Brain").
